Terms and Conditions
Prize Details
- The prize shall be $1,000 and an award.
- Only one prize per year will be awarded.
- There will always be exactly one winner. No ties.
- The decision of the judges is final and irrevocable.
- The prize will be paid via Interac e-transfer and the trophy will be mailed via Canada Post to the winner.
- The winner is responsible for paying any taxes that may result from winning the prize.
- If the selected winner does not respond or cannot be contacted within 30 days, the prize may be forfeited and awarded to another entrant at the discretion of Karl Mamer and the judges.
- Karl Mamer reserves the right to end the prize at any time for any reason.
Eligible Persons
- Students enrolled in a recognized public Canadian university or college between September 2026 and June 2027.
- Students from any one of these public Canadian universities or colleges are eligible.
- Students in Canadian private universities or colleges are not eligible.
- Students attending any satellite campus not physically located in Canada are not eligible.
- Students enrolled in high school or CEGEP are not eligible.
- Students may be enrolled full time or part time.
- The student must be 18 years or over.
Submissions Eligible for Judging and the Prize
- A student may submit one English-language work published in an eligible Canadian university or college's student newspaper or its online equivalent.
- A student must submit via the method outlined on the submission page.
- Articles from administration, faculty, or student society publications (e.g., papers, magazines, or online publications) are not eligible.
- Any email or upload containing multiple articles or links to multiple articles will be immediately disqualified.
- The work must have been published between September 1, 2026 and May 31, 2027.
- Works attributed to two or more authors will not be accepted.
- Eligible works are defined as articles, reviews, editorials, or op-eds.
- Letters to the editor, ads, or any paid-for-placement work are not eligible.
- Cartoons, artwork, poems, and audio/video works are not eligible.
- While humour can offend some and some forms like satire and parody can be used to expose problematic attitudes and policies, Karl Mamer and the judges reserve the right to remove from consideration any work they deem sexist, racist, or homophobic without a justifiable pro-social intent or artistic merit.
- Karl Mamer and the judges reserve the sole and absolute right to interpret these rules and determine submission eligibility.
- Karl Mamer and the judges reserve the right to change any of these rules at any time without notice.
- By submitting, the entrant affirms that the work is their original writing and that they are the sole author.
- Karl Mamer and the judges are not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, or misdirected submissions.
Method of Submission
- If the work is published in print, it must be submitted to the indicated email as either a PDF or a high-quality JPG/PNG scan.
- You may submit multiple image files if the work continues on another page or capturing it as one image will reduce readability.
- Judges reserve the right to reject any submission deemed unreadable.
- If the article was published only on your newspaper's website, please submit the URL to the article in the entry email.
- The article must not be behind a paywall.
- Karl Mamer and the judges offer no guarantee submitted works will be acknowledged in any way.
Rights to Republish the Entry
- By submitting your work, you consent to Karl Mamer and the judges being able to republish for the life of the award program on the award web page and pages directly related to the award web page the following:
- Your name and any biographical information you share with Karl Mamer and the judges.
- Your work in whole or in part.
- You consent to advertising or sponsorship logos appearing on the same page.
- You agree you will receive no compensation or share of any advertising found on the page or any money paid by sponsors to Karl Mamer.
- You retain all other rights to your work.
- Personal information collected will be used solely for the administration of the prize and will not be shared with third parties except as necessary to administer the award.
Fees
- There is no fee for entry.
Deadline
- Submissions will not be accepted after June 1, 2027.
- Work submitted after June 1, 2027 will not be entered into next year's contest.
Liability
- By entering, you release and hold harmless Karl Mamer and the judges from any claims, damages, or liabilities arising from participation in the contest or acceptance, use, or misuse of the prizes.
- By entering, you agree to release and hold harmless Karl Mamer and the judges from any liability related to any publicity resulting from submitting your work to Karl Mamer and the judges.
